Kasol Itineraries

How to spend a weekend, four days or a full week — without wasting a morning.

Kasol rewards slow travel, but most people arrive with a fixed number of days. These three plans assume you come by overnight bus and reach Bhuntar early in the morning; shift everything by half a day if you arrive later.

A weekend: 2 nights

  • Day 1: arrive at Bhuntar around dawn and take the local bus to Kasol. Check in, sleep an hour, then have a long breakfast. In the afternoon walk across the footbridge to Chalal and back along the river. Evening in the market.
  • Day 2: take an early bus to Manikaran: gurdwara, hot bath, langar and the old bazaar. Back in Kasol by early afternoon for a riverside café. If you have energy, walk the first hour of the Grahan trail and return.
  • Day 3: a last breakfast, then down to Bhuntar for a daytime bus, or spend the day and take the evening Volvo.

Prefer it arranged? The three-day packages from Delhi follow much the same outline.

Four days: Kasol, Tosh and Kheerganga

  • Day 1: Kasol and Chalal, as above. Get cash and pack a small bag for the trek.
  • Day 2: morning bus to Barshaini, stopping at Manikaran on the way if you start early. Walk or ride up to Tosh. Afternoon walk to the waterfall; night in Tosh.
  • Day 3: walk down to Barshaini and start for Kheerganga by 9 am via Nakthan. Reach the top mid-afternoon, soak in the hot pool and stay the night nearby, following current local rules.
  • Day 4: descend by the forest route through Kalga to Barshaini, then bus to Kasol. Evening Volvo from Bhuntar, or one more night.

New to trekking? A guided Kheerganga package replaces days 3 and 4 with everything organised.

One week: the slow valley

  • Days 1–2: Kasol, Chalal and Manikaran.
  • Day 3: hike to Grahan and stay in a homestay; or take a taxi to Malana for a careful day visit.
  • Day 4: return to Kasol, then bus to Barshaini and climb to Kalga or Pulga.
  • Day 5: a day of doing little: the fairy forest, the three-village loop, a book.
  • Day 6: trek to Kheerganga from Kalga; overnight.
  • Day 7: down via Nakthan, up to Tosh for a final night with a view — or straight back to Kasol.

Adding Manali

Manali is 75–80 km from Kasol. With two extra days you can ride up the Kullu valley, see Old Manali and Hadimba temple and take a day trip through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. Leave for Delhi from Manali; the Volvos start there.

Making any plan work

  • Book your return bus before you go up the valley, especially for Sunday nights.
  • Keep the first morning light: you will have slept badly on the bus.
  • Leave big bags at your Kasol guesthouse when you go to Tosh, Kalga or Kheerganga.
  • In the monsoon, drop the trek and add a buffer day. See safety and monsoon.
  • In winter, swap Kheerganga for a second night in Tosh and enjoy the snow.

Adding Shimla and the rest of Himachal

Kasol fits neatly into the classic Himachal loop: Shimla to Manali via Mandi, with a detour up the Parvati Valley from Bhuntar. To spend a couple of days in the old British summer capital on the way in or out, our Shimla travel guide covers the Mall, the Ridge and the toy train.

For Dharamshala, Spiti and the other valleys, our Himachal Pradesh travel guide has longer itineraries across the whole state.

Itinerary FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Kasol?

Enough for Kasol, Chalal and Manikaran, yes. It is not enough for Kheerganga unless you skip everything else.

Should I stay in Kasol or Tosh?

Both, if you have three nights or more: Kasol first for convenience, then Tosh for the views. With two nights, stay in Kasol.

Can I combine Kasol and Manali in four days?

Yes, but it is rushed: two nights in each, with no trek. Five or six days is more comfortable.

Can I visit Kasol as a day trip from Manali?

Yes. It is 2.5–3 hours each way by car, so a private day trip covering Kasol and Manikaran is the practical way.
