Two walkers on the stony forest path at Chalal

Chalal

The quiet village across the river

Chalal sits on the opposite bank of the Parvati from Kasol, on a terrace above the river. There is no road to it. You cross the footbridge at Kasol and follow a level path through pine and deodar forest, with the river beside you, for about half an hour.

The old village is a tight group of wooden houses with slate roofs and a village temple. Around it, guesthouses and garden cafés have spread along the path. It is quieter than Kasol by day; some venues host parties at night in season, so choose your guesthouse accordingly.

Top things to do in Chalal

Walk the forest trail

The path from Kasol to Chalal is the reason to come: flat, shaded and never far from the river. Go in the morning, when light comes through the pines and the trail is empty.

Linger in a garden café

Chalal’s cafés are low-key places with cushions, hammocks and river sound. Order a pot of ginger-lemon-honey tea and stay a while; nobody will hurry you.

See the old village

Walk up into the original hamlet to see traditional Kullu houses built of alternating timber and stone. This is people’s home, not an exhibit: ask before photographing anyone and keep out of courtyards and the temple enclosure.

Continue to Rasol

The trail to Rasol starts above Chalal and climbs steeply for two to three hours. Start early and carry water.

How to get to Chalal

  • On foot from Kasol: about 30 minutes from the footbridge. The path is easy but unlit — carry a torch after dark and do not walk it alone late at night.
  • From Katagla: a second bridge downstream links the road to the Chalal side, useful if you are staying before Kasol.
  • Luggage: everything must be carried. Porters can sometimes be arranged through guesthouses.

Insider tips

  • Bring cash; there is no ATM and card machines are rare.
  • If you want sleep, ask whether a guesthouse is near a party venue before you book.
  • After heavy rain the riverside path can be slippery and, rarely, damaged. Ask in Kasol if in doubt.
  • Carry your rubbish back to Kasol; waste collection on this side of the river is limited.
