Tosh

The village at the end of the road

Tosh is the last village with a road in the upper Parvati Valley. It sits at around 2,400 m on a sunny terrace above the Tosh stream, a few kilometres beyond Barshaini, looking straight up a side valley to a wall of glaciated peaks.

The old village is a knot of wooden houses around a temple; above and around it are dozens of guesthouses and cafés with terraces facing the view. It is cooler, higher and quieter than Kasol, and in winter it is usually the easiest place in the valley to find snow.

Top things to do in Tosh

Sit with the view

The main activity in Tosh is doing very little on a terrace with tea and the mountains in front of you. Choose a guesthouse at the upper end of the village for the widest outlook.

Walk to the waterfall

A path of 20–30 minutes beyond the village leads to a waterfall and a few seasonal cafés. It is an easy leg-stretch on arrival day.

Hike to Kutla

Continue up the valley for another hour or two to the meadows and scattered huts of Kutla, with closer views of the peaks. The trail goes on towards Buddhaban for those with a guide and more time.

Combine with Kheerganga

Barshaini, the start of the Kheerganga trek, is below Tosh. Many people spend a night in Tosh before or after the trek.

See the old village respectfully

The temple in the village centre is not open to outsiders — do not touch it or cross its boundary. Ask before taking photographs of people.

How to get to Tosh

  • By bus: local buses from Bhuntar and Kasol run to Barshaini, about 16 km and an hour beyond Kasol. The last buses up leave in the late afternoon — check times at the Kasol stand.
  • From Barshaini: Tosh is 3–4 km further. Walk the road in about an hour, or take a shared taxi when the road is open.
  • By taxi: taxis from Kasol go directly to Tosh; the last stretch is narrow and rough.

Insider tips

  • Nights are cold from October to April. Check that your room has enough blankets and ask about hot water.
  • After snowfall the road above Barshaini may close and you walk the last section.
  • There is no ATM beyond Kasol and Manikaran. Bring enough cash.
  • Mobile data is weak; some guesthouses have Wi-Fi that works in good weather.
