Kasol

The backpacker village on the Parvati river

Kasol is a small village at about 1,580 m on the Parvati river, roughly 30 km up the valley from Bhuntar and 4 km short of Manikaran. Until the 1990s it was a handful of houses in a pine forest; today the road through it is lined with guesthouses, cafés, bakeries and trekking shops, and it is the place almost every Parvati Valley trip starts and ends.

It is often called “Mini Israel”. For decades young Israelis have come here after their military service, and you will see Hebrew on menus and signboards, a Chabad house, and shakshuka and hummus next to dal and momos. Indian weekenders from Delhi and Chandigarh now outnumber everyone, especially from April to June. Come for the river, the forest and the walking; the village itself is small enough to see in an hour.

Top things to do in Kasol

Walk the river and the forest

Paths lead down from the main road to the banks of the Parvati, where the river runs fast and pale over boulders between tall pines. It is a place to sit, not to swim: the current is powerful and the water glacier-cold. Stay off wet rocks at the edge — see our safety page.

Cross to Chalal

From the footbridge at the edge of Kasol a level path follows the far bank through forest to Chalal in about 30 minutes. It is the valley’s gentlest walk and works for almost anyone.

Eat your way along the main street

Israeli breakfasts, wood-fired pizza, Himachali trout and siddu, Tibetan momos and thukpa, and German-bakery cakes: Kasol’s food is half the reason people stay longer than planned. Our cafés and food guide explains what to order.

Day trip to Manikaran

Buses and shared taxis run the 4 km to Manikaran all day; you can also walk the road in about an hour. Visit the gurdwara, eat langar and soak in the hot baths.

Hike to Grahan or Rasol

Two proper hill villages are reached on foot from Kasol: Grahan up a forested side valley (4–5 hours) and Rasol high above Chalal (about 3 hours, steep). Both have simple guesthouses.

Shop the market

The short market street sells woollens, Kullu shawls and caps, trekking gear to buy or rent, silver jewellery and the tie-dye and hemp goods of the backpacker trail. Prices are negotiable; quality varies.

How to get to Kasol

  • From Bhuntar: local buses to Manikaran and Barshaini pass through Kasol through the day and take roughly 1–1.5 hours for the 30 km; taxis are quicker. Bhuntar is where Delhi and Chandigarh buses to Manali drop Kasol passengers.
  • From Delhi and Chandigarh: take an overnight Volvo towards Manali and get off at Bhuntar, or look for a direct bus to Kasol or Manikaran. Details are in our getting to Kasol guide.
  • From Manali: about 75–80 km; take a bus to Bhuntar and change, hire a taxi, or book a day trip with a driver.
  • By air: Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar is the nearest, with a limited, weather-dependent schedule.

Insider tips

  • Kasol is very crowded on long weekends and from mid-April to June. Come midweek, or stay in Chalal, Katagla or further up the valley.
  • ATMs exist but often run out of cash. Withdraw in Bhuntar or Kullu, and do not rely on mobile payments when the network drops.
  • The valley is a forest and river environment: carry your rubbish out, and avoid loud music at night near homes.
  • Cannabis is illegal in India, whatever you may have heard about the valley. Police checkpoints on the road are routine — see the legal note.
  • Evenings are cool even in summer; bring a warm layer and shoes with grip.

Kasol FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Kasol?

Two nights is the minimum to see Kasol, Chalal and Manikaran. With four or five days you can add Tosh or Kalga and the Kheerganga trek. See our itineraries.

Why is Kasol called Mini Israel?

Because of the many Israeli travellers who have visited since the 1990s. Hebrew signs, Israeli dishes on almost every menu and a Chabad house are part of village life.

Is Kasol suitable for families?

Yes, for families comfortable with simple hotels and walking. The Chalal walk and Manikaran are easy with children; keep them well away from the river’s edge.
