Kheerganga is an open meadow at about 2,950 m on the south side of the upper Parvati Valley. At its top a hot spring fills a bathing pool beside a small Shiva temple; tradition says Shiva’s son Kartikeya meditated here. The name is usually explained by the milky-white (kheer-like) colour of the stream.
The trek starts at Barshaini (about 2,100 m) and is roughly 12 km each way, climbing some 850 m. It is not technical, but it is a real mountain trail: narrow in places, slippery when wet, and long enough that an early start matters.
Top things to do in Kheerganga
The Nakthan route
The classic way up follows the north bank from Barshaini through the village of Nakthan (the last one on the trail) to the Rudra Nag waterfall and temple, then crosses the Parvati and climbs steeply through forest for the final two to three hours. It is the sunnier, more direct route.
The Kalga forest route
From Barshaini climb to Kalga and follow a forest trail along the south side that joins the main path after Rudra Nag. It is shadier and quieter but less clearly marked. Many people go up one way and return by the other.
Soak in the hot spring
The pool at the top — with a screened section for women — is the reward. Wash before you get in, do not use soap or shampoo in the pool, and treat it as the sacred place it is: no alcohol and no loud music.
Stay the night
Sleeping near the top lets you see the meadow at dusk and dawn. Rules on camping have changed more than once since the authorities cleared the old tent colonies from the meadow in 2018, so ask in Barshaini or go with an operator who knows the current arrangements.
Go guided
A guided Kheerganga trek takes care of the route, meals and a place to sleep, which is worth a lot if this is your first Himalayan walk.

How to get to Kheerganga
- To the trailhead: local buses and taxis run from Kasol to Barshaini (about 16 km, an hour). Leave Kasol by 8 am if you plan to reach the top the same day.
- Time on the trail: 5–6 hours up and 4 hours down for most people. Do not start up after midday.
- Registration: there is usually a check post where trekkers enter their details. The district administration tightens rules from time to time — including closures in the monsoon and after accidents — so confirm the trek is open.
Insider tips
- Wear proper shoes with grip and carry a rain layer, a warm layer, a torch and at least a litre of water.
- Do not trek in heavy rain or in the dark. Most accidents on this trail are slips on wet sections above the river.
- There is little or no mobile signal after Barshaini. Tell your guesthouse when to expect you back.
- Carry all plastic and wrappers back down. The meadow was closed to camping largely because of the waste left behind.
- In winter the trail is under snow and should only be attempted with a guide and proper gear.
