Why visit Kasol?

A small village with a whole valley behind it

Kasol itself is tiny: one road, a market street and a bridge over the Parvati at about 1,580 m. What brings people back is everything within a day of it — forest walks to villages without roads, a Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage town built on boiling springs, and trails that climb from apple orchards to glaciers.

It is also one of the easiest corners of the Himalaya to reach on a budget: an overnight bus from Delhi or Chandigarh to Bhuntar and a local bus up the valley. This guide covers the routes, the seasons, the treks, the food and the rules — including the customs of Malana and a plain word on safety in the monsoon.

Kasol

The backpacker village on the Parvati river

A strip of guesthouses, cafés and pine forest at about 1,580 m on the banks of the Parvati, Kasol is the base camp for the whole valley: river walks, Israeli and Himachali food, a small market, and trails to Chalal, Rasol and Grahan starting from the village itself.

The white domes and buildings of the Manikaran gurdwara complex above riverside boulders Kasol & around

Manikaran

Gurdwara, temples and boiling springs

Four kilometres upriver from Kasol, Manikaran is a pilgrimage town for both Sikhs and Hindus. Steam rises from hot springs beside the cold Parvati river, the gurdwara serves free langar to everyone, and rice for the kitchen is cooked in the spring water itself.

The houses of Malana spread across a green mountainside Kasol & around

Malana

An ancient village with its own rules

Malana sits alone on a high shelf in a side valley, with its own dialect, its own village council and the deity Jamlu at the centre of life. Visitors are welcome to walk through, but only on the village’s terms: stay on the path and do not touch people, houses or temples.

Tosh

The village at the end of the road

Perched at about 2,400 m above the meeting of the Tosh stream and the Parvati, Tosh has the widest mountain views of any village you can reach by road in the valley. Guesthouses with sunny terraces, a waterfall walk and snow in winter make it the classic next stop after Kasol.

Pulga, Kalga & Tulga

Three orchard villages above Barshaini

Across the river from Barshaini, three small villages sit side by side on a forested shelf: Kalga among apple orchards, Pulga beside its tall deodar “fairy forest”, and tiny Tulga in between. There are no cars, only footpaths, homestays and a slower pace than Kasol or Tosh.

Kheerganga

The valley’s favourite trek

A meadow at about 2,950 m with a natural hot-spring pool and a small Shiva shrine, Kheerganga is reached by a 12 km trail from Barshaini through forest, waterfalls and the village of Nakthan. Fit walkers do it in five to six hours; most people make it a two-day trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Kasol?

Kasol is a village in the Parvati Valley in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, northern India. It stands on the Parvati river about 30 km east of Bhuntar and 4 km before Manikaran.

How do I get to Kasol from Delhi?

Take an overnight Volvo bus towards Manali (around 11–13 hours) and get off at Bhuntar, then a local bus or taxi for the last 30 km. Some buses run directly to Kasol or Manikaran. See getting to Kasol.

What is the best time to visit Kasol?

March to June and mid-September to November. July and August are the monsoon, with landslides and road closures; December to February is cold, with snow in the higher villages. See when to visit.

Is Kasol safe?

Yes for sensible travellers. The real risks are natural ones — the river, monsoon landslides and getting lost on trails — and the law: cannabis is illegal in India. Read our safety guide.

Can I book Kasol tours online?

A few. GetYourGuide lists a Kheerganga trek, packages from Delhi and a day trip from Manali; there is no Sar Pass listing at present. We show every real option on the tours page.

How many days are enough?

Two nights for Kasol, Chalal and Manikaran; four or five to add Tosh and Kheerganga; a week to slow down in Kalga or Pulga. See the itineraries.
