Grahan

A forest trail to a wooden village

Grahan is the last village up the Grahan stream, a side valley that joins the Parvati at Kasol. The trail starts in the middle of Kasol and follows the stream through dense forest before a final steep climb to the village at roughly 2,350 m.

With its timber houses, carved balconies and stores of hay and firewood, Grahan looks much as Kullu villages did a century ago. It is also the first night’s halt on the Sar Pass trek, so in May and June it sees a steady flow of trekking groups.

Top things to do in Grahan

Hike in from Kasol

About 8–10 km and 4–5 hours. The first half is a gentle forest walk beside the stream, crossing it on small bridges; the second half climbs steeply. In spring the forest is full of rhododendron blossom.

Explore the village

Wander the lanes between the old houses and look for the village temple at the centre. As elsewhere, do not enter or touch temple structures unless invited.

Stay in a homestay

Several families run simple homestays and there are campsites just outside the village. Meals are home-cooked: rajma, rice, local greens and thick rotis.

Walk towards Min Thach

With a guide you can continue up the Sar Pass route through forest to the meadow of Min Thach for a taste of the higher country, returning to Grahan the same day.

How to get to Grahan

  • On foot from Kasol: the trail begins near the centre of the village and follows the Grahan nala. There is no road for ordinary vehicles.
  • Guides: there are forks in the forest where people do take wrong turns. A local guide costs little and is strongly advised, especially outside the main season.
  • As part of a trek: Grahan is day one of Sar Pass; see our treks guide.

Insider tips

  • Villagers ask visitors not to bring alcohol into Grahan. Please respect this.
  • Leeches and slippery logs are a nuisance in the monsoon; the trail is best from April to June and September to November.
  • There is no ATM and little or no mobile signal. Carry cash and tell someone your plan.
  • Start by 10 am so you arrive well before dark.

Grahan FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Grahan a good first trek?

Yes. It is a single day’s walk on a clear trail to a village with beds and food — a good test before Kheerganga or Sar Pass.

Can I return to Kasol the same day?

Fit walkers can, but it makes a long day of 8–9 hours. Staying the night is better.

Do I need a permit?

No permit is needed for the walk to Grahan. Rules for longer treks change; ask the tourist office or your guide.
